Visiting Trout River is a glimpse back in time. Exploring in and around the small town you will find evidence of glacial movement, volcanic activity, as well as Plate Tectonics. Ocean Breeze, located in Trout River, is at the edge of a glacial valley and is the prefect place to start your daily adventures.
Spend one day exploring the rugged coastline by touring the Eastern Point trail and visiting the “Old Man” sea stack (now located approximate 0.5 km above sea level). When you finished exploring the “Old Man”, continue your hiking to the Lighthouse. Once there you will be greeted with an amazing view of Trout River as well as the local coastline. Enjoy the smell of the salt water as you catch your breath and grab a snack. Finish off your day with a campfire on the beach as you watch the sunset sink below the water of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, before settling in at Ocean Breeze for a good nights sleep.
Begin the second day by hiking the Trout River Pond trail, which leads you to The Narrows and beyond. From the Narrows you will have a breath-taking view of “The Elephant”, a mountain created by glacial recession that now looks likes an elephant’s head, trunk included. The Trout River Pond trail guides you along the edge of a freshwater, inland fjord and allows you to walk on the Tablelands in a more secluded, natural way. Hot? Dive in, Trout River Pond is clean and safe to swim in! If hiking this trail is not your thing, ask us about a private boat ride which allows you the spectacular view of The Elephant, The Tablelands, and the sheer cliffs of an inland fjord. Relax for awhile, maybe enjoy a picnic, before exploring a hidden beach that is only accessible by boat.
Another day may be spent hiking the Green Gardens Trail. This trail is located just 2 minutes outside of Trout River but is sure to be awe-inspiring. Hiking this trail will lead you to a magnificent view of the rugged Newfoundland coastline. The trail begins on the open serpentine barrens of the Tablelands and descends through boreal forest to a fertile volcanic sea coast. The coast is a wonderful array of sea stacks, coves, and beaches topped off with lush cliff-top meadows. One can easily spend many hours exploring along the shore, admiring the abundance of wildflowers in the area, or just lazing on the meadows staring out to sea. If cold North Atlantic water if your thing, dive in! Many people have taken a quick dip in the ocean to help cool off.
Would you like to experience Trout River from another perspective? Rent a kayak or paddle board for the day! Begin your day by kayaking in Trout River Pond, then travel the river linking Trout River Pond to the ocean, before spending hours kayaking in and around Trout River Cove. See all the place that you have hiked and explored on foot but now from the sea! When you are ready to end your exploration adventure, you can pull the kayak onto the beach in front of Ocean Breeze. Paddle boards are also available!

Watch the boats exit and enter the harbor from the front deck of Ocean Breeze and then at the end of the day head down to chat with the locals.
ATV to a resettled community for another taste of our history. Chimney Cove was once a lively fishing community but was resettled due to the dangers and challenges faced regarding travel. Locals have taken it upon themselves to add plaques and crosses to mark the graves of their family members. Hike to the top of Chimney Cove Head or relax on the beach and listen to the waves as you grab a bite to eat.
